Bucket Of Coal

I made this as a fun toy for my cats, but it would be suitable for kids as well, just don’t put in the catnip.

Materials:
·      
Less than 1 ball of red cotton yarn, less than
one ball of white cotton yarn less than 1 ball of Black
·      
Polyfiber fill
·      
F Hook (3.75 mm)
·      
G Hook (4.25 mm)
·      
Yarn needle and scissors
Stitches/Abbreviations:
·      
Chain: Ch
·      
Single Crochet: SC
·      
Slip stitch: SL
·      
2 single crochet in 1 stitch (SC2)
·      
Crab stitch: sc worked left to right instead of
left to right 
Notes:
·      
Ch  at
beginning of round does not count as a stitch;
For Bucket
·      
Carry the color not in use through the work, it
will be on the back and not really visible
·      
Change colors in rounds by picking up the
carried color on the last yarn over of the stitch before the new color start
(see plenty of videos on color changes mid-row on YouTube). See photos below.   
·      
Stitch counts at end of each round in
parentheses
·      
To get swirl pattern the colors should be offset
by 1 (see chart photo).
Gauge Test: For Coal (small): length= about 1.5 inches, 4
rows= approx. 1 inch,
For coal (large): length = about 2.25 inches, 4 rows = about
1 inch.
For Bucket: 4 rounds= about 2 inches.
Coal (small) (make 5)
With F Hook
Starting ch. 8.
Row 1: in second ch from hook, sc, one sc in each stitch
across (7 sc)
Row 2: ch 1 and turn 1 sc in each stitch across (7 sc)
Row 3-16: repeat row 2.
Fold piece in half and seam together 2 sides with sc to form
a pocket, fasten off leaving a long tail, turn pocket inside out so that seam
edges are on the inside. Fill with polyfiber fill (and cat nip if making a cat
toy), use long tail sew piece seam together final side. (see photos below)
Coal (Large) (make 5)
With F Hook
Starting ch. 10
Row 1: in second ch from hook sc, one sc in each stitch
across (9)
Row 2: ch. 1 and turn, 1 sc in each stitch across (9)
Row 3-20: repeat row 2.
Fold piece in half and seam together 2 sides with sc to form
a pocket, fasten off leaving a long tail, turn pocket inside out so that seam

BUCKET
Round 1: ch2, in ch farthest from hook 8 sc, alternate 1 of
each red and white) (8)
Round 2: ch 1, SC2 in each stitch around, alternate colors
so that the colors are offset by 1 stitch, sl to top of 1st SC (16)
Round 3: Ch. 1, *SC 2, SC in next stitch repeat from *
around, (again alternate colors offset by 1). Sl to top of 1st SC
(24)
Round 4: Ch 1, *SC2, SC in each of next 2 stitches, repeat
from * around (again alternate colors offset by 1). Sl to top of 1st
SC (32)
Round 5: Ch1, * SC2, SC in each of next 3 stitches, repeat
from * around (again alternate colors offset by 1). Sl to top of 1st
DC (40)
Round 6: Ch1, * SC2, SC in each of next 4 stitches, repeat
from * around (again alternate colors offset by 1). Sl to top of 1st
SC (48)
Round 7: Ch1, * SC2, SC in each of next 5 stitches, repeat
from * around (again alternate colors offset by 1). Sl to top of 1st
SC (54)
Round 8: Ch1, 1 sc in each stitch around, (again alternate
colors offset by 1). Sl to top of 1st SC (54)
Round 9-28: repeat round 8.
Round 29: Crab stitch all the way around to make finished
edge. 

Using needle and Black yarn, stitch the word COAL on to front of bucket.
